Carter Wellborn

About the Artist

Mentally handicapped brother of artist Annie Wellborn.

Information from the Athens Daily Herald newspaper:

Carter Wellborn, (died October 14, 2013) was an 86-year-old mentally disabled northeast Georgia man who has artwork in collections across the U.S. and Europe. He was the brother-in-law of famed Georgia folk artist Annie Wellborn, who died in 2010. Relatively unknown as an artist in the area, few people knew the wide market that existed for Wellborn’s work.

Robert Lowery, the owner of Lowery Art Gallery in Danielsville, GA knew Wellborn for more than 10 years and sold his artwork without asking for a commission. “A lot of people don’t realize Carter is in some really significant art brut and folk art collections,” Lowery said, explaining art brut is a term for art made by people with mental disabilities or psychiatric conditions.
